If two characters are in direct contest, both characters make checks and **compare results to determine the winner.** If a character succeeds on their check and their opponent fails, they win the contest. If both characters succeed on their checks, the character with the higher relevant attribute wins. However, if one character achieves a **Great Success,** they win the contest even if their opponent has a higher attribute score. If both characters achieve a **Great Success,** they once again compare attribute scores. In the event both characters' relevant attribute scores are the same, the character who rolled the lowest on their check wins the contest. If both characters fail their checks, **nothing happens.** > ### Example > *Wulfsige* is a Barbarian with a Str of 17 attempting to [[grabbed|grab]] *Pembë,* a Magic User with a Str of 6, beginning an opposed Str (Athletics) check. *Wulfsige* rolls an 18, failing his check, while *Pembë* rolls a 7, also failing her check. *Wulfsige* tries to [[grabbed|grab]] *Pembë* again, this time rolling a 10 and succeeding on his check! However, *Pembë* rolls a natural 1, achieving a Great Success! Even though *Wulfsige's* Str is much higher than *Pembë's,* she wins the contest because she achieved a Great Success and *Wulfsige* only succeeded normally.
