Smog belched by manufakturies chokes the skies above the narrow-laned cities of Elgarde. It is not truly known when the ancient Calds first settled this island nation, but scholars are certain that they were the earliest [[Men|Manfolk]] to arrive in Runera and quickly spread throughout the mainland. Those original settlers were at first barbaric pillagers who raided lands throughout the Sea of Frost and the Great Ocean, but over the centuries they developed a highly cosmopolitan and mercantile society that prizes efficiency and frigid pragmaticism above all else. Today, coin has replaced blood as the true currency of Elgarde; the Kanselier and his Rijksgraaf strike cutthroat deals with the merchant guilds to further bloat the riches of the Kanselrijk, all while common folk bleed their hands raw in the manufakturies of the Handelsgilden or the grain fields of the burgraafs. Scholarly progress is also highly cherished in Elgarde, with many advancements in alchemy and physiology being made by the Alkeminkanselieren and Koroninkanselieren respectively. Despite these developments, low-born Elgardians struggle to carve out a place for themselves among the ever-growing trade empires of the Handelsgilden and the expansionism of the Kanselrijk, with many yearning for simpler times.
