The vast deserts of Zhethranos are considered by some to be the last remnant of Old Ildirian rule in Runera. During the height of their empire, the Ildirians subjugated the native Azori nomads and built great cities in the lush oases that surround the Sea of Azor, transforming their newly conquered land into one of Ildir's richest provinces. While the [[Coalescence]] spelled disaster for the rest of Ildir, Zhethranos was mostly spared from the destruction and managed to retain an imperial government, with its Archon declaring himself regent-lord of the empire until an heir emerged. Over a thousand years later, the throne of Ildir remains empty and the Zhethrani continue to claim that they are the true inheritors of Ildir. While they obsess over their Ildirian heritage and resort to eugenics to preserve “pure-blooded Ildirian features,” the native Azori never disappeared from the deserts. The Zhethrani consider them a strange folk, dressing in billowy shawls and wandering the Wastes in close-knit tribes that only come to the oasis cities fleetingly to trade their goods. The Azori hide their identities from all save their own kin by donning ivory masks unique to their tribe and adopting false "watering names" which they use when treating with outsiders.
