The treacherous and vast mountains of the Amlann cut deeply and fiercely through the [[Andar|Andaran]] Peninsula like an old scar upon a veteran’s stump. These razor peaks and frigid glaciers are nearly impassable to the common traveller, for what few roads leading through their hidden valleys fell into disrepair over a millennium ago with the collapse of [[Old Ildir]]. Those either brave or foolish enough to venture within these mountains will discover their less than welcoming inhabitants: clans of mountain and frost giants, tribes of [[orcs]] and goblin-kin, or coverts of trolls, ogres, yetis, and other savage beings. They defend their territories with a bestial fury not only from curious explorers or far-flung travelers, but also from the manifold horrors that lurk within frozen caverns and shadowy vales: harpies, griffons, wendigos, and other remnants of [[Coalescence]]. Many a visitor to the Amlann has found themselves roasted alive on an ogre or troll’s spit, their charred corpse eaten with great fervor, and then only hours later consumed once again by proxy, as the very same creature that first ingested them is themselves devoured by a starving frost wyrm. The Amlann, however, are not completely devoid of all civilization. For somewhere within their farthest reaches lies the greatest mages’ tower in the known world: Ammentol. Considered ancient even before [[Coalescence]], Ammentol was the first covert constructed by the old Conclave and serves as their primary base of operations to this day. It is within Ammentol that the Council of Arch Magi holds court to debate the issues of the day, and where hundreds of individuals possessing arcane talent are forced by the [[Hand of Alor|Hand]] to master and control the destructive potential of their innate abilities. While its halls hold many secrets, the most basic fact of its existence has proved elusive for over a thousand years: that being its precise location. While the Amlann are vast, they have been charted even since the days of [[Old Ildir]], yet none have discovered in which valley, or upon which cliff, or beside which mountain the tower resides. Prospective students of the Conclave prove little help in this search, for they are taken to and from the tower through a winding maze of mountain passes, underground tunnels, and secret vales which seem to change minutely or grandly upon each subsequent journey. There are those who claim that Ammentol is hidden by the most powerful illusion magics known to mortalkind, which serve not only to obscure the tower’s location, but also work to warp the very shape of the lands surrounding it. Others, however, theorize that the tower is frequently relocated throughout the Amlann with teleportation [[Spell List|spells]] of impossible magnitude, so that it never truly is anywhere. Whatever the truth may be, it is known only by the Arch Magi, and is not likely to be revealed to the world within any of our lifetimes.
